The infection causes the upper layers of the skin to collapse, where blisters form and then dissolve, leaving behind wounds that resemble a severe burn. When the infection covers a large area of the body, the result can be fatal to the patient's life. This skin syndrome is treated with intravenous antibiotics and fluids to prevent dehydration.

Η treatment for staphylococcal infections depends on the location and severity of the infection. More serious infections in large areas of the skin, other organs of the body, or in the bloodstream are generally treated with intravenous antibiotics.
