It is due to the resurgence of the virus <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chickenpox-herpes zoster,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which after causing chickenpox at a young age, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is permanently established in our body and remains dormant in the sensory nerve endings of the skin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>HOW OFTEN DOES IT OCCUR?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually 30% of people will develop the disease at some point in their lives<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All ages are affected but the incidence of the disease increases with age (50% of people over 85 years of age are almost certain to get the disease).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>WHO IS\/ARE MOST AT RISK?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The factors currently thought to be involved in the reactivation of the virus are: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old age<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (usually people older than 50 years), patients with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autoimmune diseases<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic lung or kidney disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sufferers from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malignancies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (usually hematological, Hodgkin's disease), sufferers of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes mellitus or HIV infection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and of course the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic fatigue and mental stress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also mobilize the disease. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs, corticosteroids, radiotherapy and statins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (anti-cholesterol drugs) are also considered factors that could cause the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>HOW SERIOUS IS THE DISEASE?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u039f <\/span><b>shingles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause damage from all systems of the body. Ocular involvement and the development of metherpetic neuralgia are not uncommon and are the most serious complications. Metherpetic neuralgia is defined as intolerable pain following the rash.  It lasts for months or years and debilitates the sufferer mentally and physically. More rarely the disease may, depending on its location, cause peripheral nerve paralysis, encephalitis, myelitis, facial paralysis and rarely, in severely immunocompromised patients, even death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>IS THERE A CURE?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the treatment is threefold<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We aim to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suppression<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of inflammation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain control<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">containment of the infection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by the virus. Early diagnosis of the disease and the administration of specific antiviral drugs help to reduce the symptoms of the disease and speed up recovery. In some cases, the administration of corticosteroids is also necessary. Proper topical treatment also helps the healing of skin lesions. Unfortunately <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we can hardly achieve the final eradication of the virus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the treatment of pain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, different classes of analgesics are used. <\/span><b><i>In recent years a vaccine against shingles has been standardised<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which mainly concerns people aged over 60.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must never forget that you must <\/span><b><i>trust your skin to your dermatologists<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are the only doctors who have the ultimate say in the pathological and aesthetic problems of your skin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source : https:\/\/www.edae.gr\/dermalogos\/<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shingles is a viral skin rash, relatively limited in size, usually painful, and mainly affects older people and people with a weakened immune system (immunosuppressed).
