Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is usually sexually transmitted.
REASONS
The cause of syphilis is a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. The bacterium enters the body through small wounds or cuts on the skin or mucous membranes.
Syphilis is contagious in its primary and secondary stages, and sometimes at the beginning of the latent phase. It cannot be transmitted by touching or using an infected garment, cutlery, knife, doorknob, toilet, bath or swimming pool. In the case of treatment, there is always the possibility of reinfection if the treated patient comes into contact with a foreign syphilis sore again.
WHAT WE DO
The factors that may favour the transmission of syphilis are:
- Unprotected sexual intercourse
- The large number of sexual partners
- HIV infection, which causes Aids
THERAPY
If syphilis is diagnosed and treated in its early stages, it is easy to cure. Treatment is with an appropriate antibiotic, often penicillin is sufficient. Depending on the stage, a corresponding treatment is needed. Pills can be given, it can be done by intravenous injection or intramuscular injection. Despite treatment, immunity is not abandoned, i.e. if the person comes into contact with an infected patient again, he or she is re-infected.
After treatment, a blood test is required to check the effectiveness of the treatment.
