PSORIASIS

PSORIASIS IS A CHRONIC SKIN DISEASE WITH A VARIETY OF SYMPTOMS.

The most common symptoms of psoriasis are the rough red plates with a well-formed outline. These round or oval plaques of psoriasis are covered by a thick white epidermis, called a flake (scale). Both the size and the number of lesions varies. This very common skin disease can occur at any age. Psoriasis usually occurs on areas of the skin that are subject to friction, such as the knees, elbows, abdomen and lower back. It can also appear on the scalp, hands, feet and nails.

We do not yet know exactly the causes that cause the psoriasis. However, we know that psoriasis can occur in people with a genetic predisposition to this disease when certain conditions are present. agents such as:

  • stress
  • excessive work
  • psychological shock
  • clothes that rub against the skin
  • specific medicines
  • an infection (nasopharyngitis, pharyngitis... )

Essentially, psoriasis is caused by chronic inflammation of the skin, which, confirmed by the presence of T-lymphocytes, accelerates the cell renewal process, resulting in accelerated production of keratinocytes, i.e. epidermal cells. Instead of the usual 28-day renewal process, it takes only 3-4 days for keratinocytes to pass from the basal layer to the keratin layer of the epidermis. The cells remain on the surface of the epidermis and begin to accumulate. This causes the red scaly plaques or psoriasis. Although these psoriasis plaques may sometimes be indistinguishable, others are very noticeable and are therefore a disadvantage for people suffering from psoriasis.

Η treatment of psoriasis is done in the following ways:

  • With ointments, creams and various lotions recommended by dermatologists to stop the inflammation. They also remove excess scales and smooth rough skin. Moisturizing creams are effective in soothing the itching.
  • Phototherapy is recommended and uses UVA, UVB or laser rays to slow down the production of skin cells.
  • With medicines in pill form used in very severe forms of psoriasis. - Finally, spa therapy is also used to treat psoriasis of the skin. Thermal water has healing and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the number and size of lesions.
