One of the most common procedures in the nail area are related to onychorrhaphy or onychocryptosis. This is the penetration of the onychos (nail) into the skin which if not treated in time, can cause infection and in some cases bleeding. It occurs mainly on the big toe but may also occur on the other toes.
REASONS
- Genetic factors such as a deformity of the foot
- Trauma
- Wrong nail cutting
- Use of narrow shoes
- Diseases of the big toe
THERAPY
At the initial stage, antibiotics and antiseptics are used. If conservative treatment does not work, then the solution is surgery. The combination of conservative and surgical treatment will lead to the solution of the problem.
Removal of part of the onychid up to the uterus or resection of the entire onychid depends on the severity of the lesion. It is a simple procedure and the operation is performed under local anaesthesia.
The postoperative pain is minimal while at the same time a complete cure is achieved with minimal recurrence. Recovery is achieved within 10-15 days. After the operation the patient can return to his/her daily routine and it is recommended to limit walking for 24 hours.
WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR
- Use of appropriate and comfortable footwear
- Adherence to hygiene rules and regular limb care
- Nail cutting should be done with care and clean tools
- Avoid cutting too close to the skin
