STAPHYLOCOCCUS

More than 30 species of staphylococcus bacteria cause infectionsbut the most common staphylococcus is caused by the bacterium staphylococcus aureus. If the bacteria enter the body in some way, e.g. through a wound or through the respiratory tract, they can cause serious infections.

The Symptoms of staphylococcal skin disease include stores with pus, while the pain, the swelling and the redness in the area of infection is quite common. If the staph infection passes into the blood (bacteremia or septicaemia), symptoms include fever, ρίγη and low blood pressure (hypotension).

Ο staphylococcus causes many different types infections. Most of the infections are caused by localized inflammation, or pockets of infection called stores. Superficial skin infections, such as eczema (a form of skin drying); or cellulite (infection of the skin substrates) are the most common. Women who breastfeed can get a staph infection in the breast called mastitis, which can release bacteria into the mother's milk. Staphylococcus bacteria in the lungs can cause pneumonia. When Staphylococcus aureus enters the bones it can cause osteomyelitis. Staphylococcus aureus infection in the blood can infect the heart or heart valves (endocarditis). If the infection gets into the bloodstream it can spread to other organs and cause very serious and life-threatening infections, such as bacteremia or sepsis. Sepsis can lead to καταπληξία or multiple organ collapse, which can quickly lead to death.

The staphylococcal skin infections can cause a serious condition called "skin burn syndrome", which is most commonly seen in children, but can also occur in adults. The infection causes the upper layers of the skin to collapse, where blisters form and then dissolve, leaving behind wounds that resemble a severe burn. When the infection covers a large area of the body, the result can be fatal to the patient's life. This skin syndrome is treated with intravenous antibiotics and fluids to prevent dehydration.

Η treatment for staphylococcal infections depends on the location and severity of the infection. Minor skin infections can be treated with topical antibiotic ointment, or by taking antibiotics from the mouth. Abscesses are usually treated by incision and drainage, or surgery. More serious infections in large areas of the skin, other organs of the body, or in the bloodstream are generally treated with intravenous antibiotics. An infection from the antibiotic-resistant type of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can be particularly dangerous.

Η Prevention remains the best defense against staphylococcus infection. At medical office our diagnosis of a staphylococcal skin infection is made by simple Analysis of the skin scars and if necessary, laboratory examination. Repair us in case you find yourself with suspicious "pimples".
